Effective Vinyl Record Cleaning with Record Restore explained!

If cleaning a vinyl record were simply a matter of removing dust and dirt we could achieve it in much the same way as we clean a carpet, eg vacuuming. The task of cleaning a vinyl record is far more technical and indeed deals with much, much smaller challenges!

The dust or dirt in a record’s groove (‘soiling’ in chemical terms), when examined under a microscope, consists of grease, abrasive materials and flocculated solids which resemble wool fibres covered with a soft waxy substance. They cannot be simply vacuumed, wiped, brushed or shaken away as they are typically tightly bound in the record’s grooves by binder substances which include static electricity. Of these binders, if the static charge of micro- particulates is not eliminated the particles will remain on the record.

These contaminants degrade the sound by interfering with the vibration of the stylus and by introducing their own noise (often mistakenly referred to as scratches). While a scratch is permanent damage and not able to be fixed, the noise introduced by soiling can be eliminated, if the soiling can be fully removed.

An effective cleaning compound, by its dispersive action, should deflocculate the soiling by:

  • Eliminating the static charge of the soiling,
  • breaking up the fibres and creating a colloid or jelly-like suspension of the remnants, and
  • emulsifying the grease whereby it will be suspended in minute globules, for example in a manner similar to that by which butter is suspended in minute globules in milk.

The process must now achieve the complete removal of the cleaning compound solution with its suspended, dissolved soils. Only then can the stylus make uninterrupted and unimpeded contact with the record groove.

Soiling On Vinyl Records

Soiling by definition consists of micro-particulates (dust, clays, carbon, diamond dust, minerals, etc) of which a proportion is bound together and bound to the surface by static electricity, oils, grease, resins, etc. While loose particulate soiling can be removed by vacuuming, (e.g. in the case of carpets, or dusting, blowing, etc.) the binder substances in a

record’s groove pose a tougher challenge. In the case of vinyl record soiling, a further binder is static electricity which is induced on a record by a phenomenon known as the triboelectric effect. All binder effects must be overcome if complete soiling removal is to be achieved.

SCA Record Restore! – A Purpose Built Vinyl Record Cleaner

Record Restore, with its unique design, achieves all these objectives, including ongoing static electricity elimination, in a single application. Restore does this by:

  • dissolving the greases and oils;
  • lowering their viscosity and neutralising statically charged micro-particulate soils,
  • thereby breaking their adhesion to the surface; then
  • sealing all dissolved materials in a removable film for complete removal
  • ongoing protection against the triboelectric effect1 (static electricity generation)

Restore emulsifies the oils, by creating micelles (colloids) which are suspended away from the record surface so they become available to be removed. At the same time the released particulate soils are dissolved into solution enabling their effective removal.

The triboelectric effect is a type of contact electrification on which certain materials become electrically charged after they are separated from a different material with which they were in contact. Rubbing the two materials against each other increases the contact between their surfaces, and hence the triboelectric effect. Certain materials (which include dry human skin) rubbed against PVC will induce a negative charge. Record Restore is a wet, cationic solution (ie the hydrophilic compound carries a surfeit of positive ions) and dissipates the disc’s negative charge. It also stops the effect reoccurring by depositing positive ions on the record surface. This effect appears to be permanent.

Advanced Methodology

The Record Restore method of vinyl record cleaning – spread and peel – differs from other cleaning approaches in several important ways:

  • It is a non-contact methodology (the viscous fluid itself acts as a lubricant on the brush); there is no harsh rubbing or percussive bombardment of the delicate record surface;
  • Each cleaning episode is discrete with no reuse of cleaning fluid thereby achieving completely repeatable outcomes;
  • Restore is fast, silent, does not require electricity and being non-mechanical never breaks down;
  • No premixing of chemicals, and
  • Sets up in only one square foot of work

Empirical testing has shown Record Restore to be highly effective in restoring fidelity to older vinyl records with up to an 11db increase in overall signal to noise ratio and an 8db improvement to the peak noise floor.

For new records, Restore is also effective in removing production residues records such as mould release (montan wax) as well as imparting a lasting protection against static electricity.
